1. A Firewall acts as a digital barrier or “gatekeeper” between a business’s trusted internal network and untrusted external networks, such as the internet. Its primary role is to monitor and filter incoming and outgoing network traffic based on a defined set of security rules. By inspecting “packets” of data, a firewall can block unauthorized access attempts, prevent malware from communicating with external servers, and hide the internal IP addresses of a company’s computers from potential hackers. Essentially, it ensures that only legitimate and safe digital communication is allowed to pass through the company’s
2. For employees working remotely, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is critical because it creates a “secure tunnel” over the public internet. When an employee connects to a VPN, all their data is encrypted before it leaves their device, making it unreadable to anyone, including internet service providers or hackers on public Wi-Fi. A VPN also allows remote workers to access internal company resources (like private file servers or databases) as if they were physically present in the office, ensuring that sensitive business data remains protected from interception during transit.
