Module 1: Introduction to Fintech

This module provides a foundational understanding of what fintech is, its historical roots, and the primary drivers of its recent growth. It introduces the learner to the key sectors within fintech and frames the overall scope of the course, setting the stage for a deeper dive into specific technologies and applications.

  • Suggested Materials:
    • “The Fintech Book” by Susanne Chishti and Janos Barberis (Chapters 1-3).
    • YouTube: “What is Fintech?” – a video from a reputable financial news source like Bloomberg or CNBC.
    • Online article: “A Brief History of Fintech” from a financial publication like Forbes.
    • Checklist of Questions:
      • What is the core definition of fintech, and how does it differ from traditional finance?
      • Fintech (Financial Technology) is the use of digital technology to improve, automate, or create financial services and products.

      • The main difference from traditional finance:

        • Traditional finance: Relies on conventional systems (banks, financial institutions, face-to-face interactions, manual processes).

        • Fintech: Uses technology (AI, blockchain, big data, mobile apps) to make services faster, more efficient, cheaper, and more accessible.

      • Identify and describe at least three key drivers of the recent fintech boom.
      • Advancements in digital technology – Internet access, smartphones, AI, big data, and blockchain enable smarter and instant financial services.

      • Changing consumer behavior – Millennials and Gen Z prefer fast, convenient, app-based services over traditional banking procedures.

      • Limitations of traditional finance – A large number of unbanked or underbanked individuals push fintech to provide financial inclusion solutions.

      • What are the main categories of fintech companies, and how do they differentiate themselves?
        1. Payments & Transfers – Focus on digital payments, e-wallets, and remittances (e.g., PayPal, GoPay, OVO).

        2. Lending & Crowdfunding – Provide peer-to-peer lending or investment platforms (e.g., KoinWorks, Funding Societies).

        3. WealthTech / Investment Platforms – Apps for stock trading, mutual funds, robo-advisors (e.g., Bibit, eToro).

        4. InsurTech – Digital insurance services, automated claims, flexible products (e.g., Qoala, Lemonade).

        5. Blockchain & Cryptocurrency – Blockchain-based apps, crypto trading, NFTs, DeFi.

        6. RegTech – Technology solutions for compliance and data security.

They differentiate themselves based on their service focus, the technology applied (AI, blockchain, data analytics), and their target market (retail, SMEs, corporates, or the unbanked).
