This journal article proposes a trust chain framework using a private blockchain, decentralized applications (DApps), and distributed databases to enhance the identification, traceability, and authentication of manufacturing systems (MS) in Industry 4.0. It integrates permissioned blockchain networks, smart contracts, and a consensus mechanism to establish a comprehensive identification mechanism for ICs, modules, and systems. Blockchain addresses are registered in the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) and structured using a hierarchical content identifier mechanism (HCIDM) via a Merkle DAG. Simulations using QBN, DApps, and IPFS validate the architecture, demonstrating improved scalability, security, and traceability. The results show that compared to traditional centralized systems, this decentralized approach reduces costs (0.002094 Ether) while enhancing security and preventing counterfeit components. This innovation supports both manufacturing and product advancements, aligning with Industry 4.0 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There will stil be several limitations n this work, such as transparency and verifiability. The journal article stated that in the future work, the study will enhance current efforts on extending the proposed system to achieve a secure end-to-end transparent and verifiable supply chain.
