Module Question 5

1. Describe the steps of the k-Means clustering algorithm. What does the ‘k’ represent?

The k-Means clustering algorithm is an unsupervised learning method used to group data points into clusters based on their similarities. The value of k represents the number of clusters that the algorithm will create.

The algorithm works through several steps. First, it selects k initial centroids, which represent the centres of the clusters. Second, each data point is assigned to the nearest centroid. Third, the algorithm recalculates each centroid by finding the mean position of the data points assigned to that cluster. These steps are repeated until the cluster assignments or centroid positions no longer change significantly.

For example, a company can use k-Means to group customers based on their shopping habits. If the company chooses k = 3, the algorithm will attempt to divide the customers into three clusters with similar characteristics.

2. Why is dimensionality reduction useful in machine learning?

Dimensionality reduction is useful in machine learning because it reduces the number of features or variables in a dataset while preserving as much important information as possible. This can make the data easier to process and help reduce computational costs.

Another benefit is that dimensionality reduction can make complex datasets easier to visualize, especially when the data has many features. It can also help reduce noise and remove redundant information, which may improve model performance in some cases.

For example, a company may have customer data containing dozens of features, such as age, income, purchase frequency, and spending habits. By applying dimensionality reduction, the company can represent the data using fewer variables while retaining important patterns.

3. Provide a real-world application for clustering (e.g., customer segmentation).

One real-world application of clustering is customer segmentation in business. Clustering allows a company to group customers based on similarities in their characteristics or behaviours, without requiring predefined categories.

For example, an online store can use a clustering algorithm such as k-Means to group customers based on their purchase frequency, spending habits, and preferred products. The results might identify groups such as frequent buyers, customers who spend a lot, and customers who only shop occasionally.

By understanding these groups, the company can develop more suitable marketing strategies, such as offering loyalty rewards to frequent buyers or providing special promotions to occasional customers. Therefore, clustering helps businesses understand their customers and make more informed marketing decisions.

4. What is the main objective of PCA?

The main objective of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is to reduce the number of dimensions or features in a dataset while preserving as much of its important information as possible. PCA transforms the original features into a smaller set of new variables called principal components, which capture the main patterns of variation in the data.

PCA is useful when a dataset contains many features that may be related to one another. By reducing the number of dimensions, it can make data easier to analyze, visualize, and process. For example, a company with customer data containing many variables can use PCA to simplify the dataset and make it easier to identify general patterns in customer behaviour.

In conclusion, PCA helps simplify complex datasets while retaining as much important information as possible.
