How would you explain the difference between narrow AI and general AI to someone with no technical background?
-
What was the significance of the Dartmouth Workshop in 1956?
-
In your opinion, is the Turing Test still a valid measure of machine intelligence? Justify your answer.
-
What is the “AI effect,” and can you provide a modern example?
Answer :
- Narrow AI vs. General AI
Narrow AI is designed to perform a specific task, such as recommending videos, recognizing faces, or translating languages. General AI (AGI) would have the ability to understand, learn, and perform many different tasks like a human. In simple terms, Narrow AI is good at one specific job, while General AI would be capable of handling many types of jobs. - Significance of the Dartmouth Workshop (1956)
The Dartmouth Workshop was significant because it is widely considered one of the events that formally established artificial intelligence as a field of research. Researchers discussed the idea that human intelligence could potentially be simulated by machines, helping shape future AI research. - Is the Turing Test still valid?
In my opinion, the Turing Test is still useful, but it is not a complete measure of machine intelligence. It tests whether a machine can communicate in a way that is difficult to distinguish from a human. However, a machine can produce convincing conversations without truly understanding, reasoning, or having consciousness. Therefore, the test is useful for evaluating human-like communication, but not overall intelligence. - The AI Effect
The AI effect is the tendency for people to stop considering something as “AI” once it becomes common and familiar. For example, voice assistants such as Siri or Google Assistant were once seen as impressive AI technology. Today, many people simply view voice recognition and automated responses as normal features of smartphones rather than AI.
