Module 2: Interpersonal and Non-Verbal Communication

  • Focus: Developing active listening skills, interpreting body language, and building professional rapport.
  • Suggested Online Materials:
    1. Watch TED Talks on “body language” and “active listening.”
    2. Read articles about building rapport and emotional intelligence (EQ) in the workplace.
    3. Explore tutorials on providing and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Checklist Questions:
    1. What are the key differences between hearing and active listening? List three techniques you can use to become a more active listener.

1. Hearing vs Active Listening

  • Hearing is passive — you simply perceive sounds without really processing them.
  • Active listening is intentional — you fully focus, understand, and respond to the speaker.

Three techniques to improve active listening:

  • Maintain eye contact → shows attention and respect
  • Paraphrase or summarize → confirms understanding (“So what you mean is…”)
  • Avoid interrupting → let the speaker finish before responding
  1. Describe five types of non-verbal cues and what they might communicate in a professional meeting.

2. Five Types of Non-Verbal Cues

  • Facial expressions → show emotions (smiling = agreement, frowning = confusion)
  • Eye contact → indicates confidence and engagement
  • Body posture → upright = attentive, slouching = bored or disengaged
  • Gestures → hand movements can emphasize ideas or show enthusiasm
  • Tone of voice (paralanguage) → how something is said (calm, tense, excited) affects meaning

In a meeting, these cues can reveal true feelings even if words don’t.

  1. How can you use feedback as a tool for professional growth, both when giving and receiving it?

3. Using Feedback for Professional Growth

  • When giving feedback:
    • Be specific and constructive
    • Focus on behavior, not personality
    • Offer suggestions for improvement
  • When receiving feedback:
    • Stay open and not defensive
    • Ask questions to clarify
    • Use it as a chance to improve skills

Feedback helps you grow because it shows your strengths and areas to improve, making you more effective and professional over time.
